THE DIVISION
The City of Visalia's Information Services Division is part of the Finance & Technology Services Department and serves all City Departments ensuring the smooth integration and maintenance of technology infrastructure and services. The Division is responsible for the support and management of the City’s servers, networks, phone systems, desktops, email, internet access, and various applications citywide. This includes financial systems, permitting systems, utility billing, computer-aided dispatch, police and fire emergency systems, and hundreds of other applications. The division’s staff is committed to providing quality IS services and support.

Examples of Duties

THE POSITION
The City is recruiting for Computer Technician to become part of our team. The selected candidate will be responsible for troubleshooting, maintaining, and implementing desktop computer and communications systems. This position will install, configure, and test computer hardware, software, and peripheral equipment. They will be the primary contact for network users and provide training and technical assistance to all users.

Qualifications / Requirements

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will have technical experience with computers involving configuration, installation, and networking. They will be able to work independently on complex technical issues, develop and maintain effective working relationships and communicate effectively in verbal and written form. The ideal candidate will be organized and have the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously. Finally, the ideal candidate must be willing and have a desire to continue learning and developing the skills necessary to be an effective Computer Technician.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skill and ability is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skill and abilities would be:
  • Two years of job-related technical experience with computers, involving configuration, installation, and networking.
  • CompTIA, Microsoft, and Cisco certifications are desirable.
  • Graduation with a degree from an accredited college or university with major work in computer science or business information systems or a closely related field is desirable.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Successful completion of in-depth Department of Justice background check.
  • Possession of valid California Driver's License by time of appointment.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS
Positions in this class are typically situated in a standard office environment resulting in little exposure to the weather. Crawling, stooping, bending, climbing and lifting (up to 50 lbs) may be required.

SELECTION PROCESS
