JOB SPECIFICATION EDUCATION ASSISTANT THE POSITION Under the immediate supervision and direction of certificated personnel, Education Assistant personnel assist in conducting positive learning experiences for students in assigned areas of study; perform a variety of clerical and supportive tasks for instructional personnel; and perform related work as required. RESPONSIBLE TO: Principal DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Education Assistant personnel are directly assigned, supervised, and trained by principals, other certificated instructional staff, and through District programs, as appropriate. They assist certificated instructional staff in providing positive, concentrated, standards-aligned instruction and learning activities to individual and small groups of students; bringing stimulating and creative experiences to the learning process; and creating a proper classroom or learning environment. Full responsibility for appropriate standards-based instruction, curriculum planning and implementation, and student evaluation, including the assignment of grades, is the responsibility of the certificated staff member(s). Generally, Education Assistant personnel devote most of their time working directly with students. The duties listed below are typical for positions in the class collectively but no one position will necessarily include all these duties. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive: - Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring to re-enforce the learning of the academic content standards. - Assist certificated instructional staff in developing and presenting instructional curriculum, materials and learning activities. - Assist in the administration and monitoring of student assessments, including the scoring of tests, as directed and when appropriate. - Supervise students in classrooms, on the school grounds and on field trips as needed. - Assist in classroom management and discipline, including observing and recording behavior patterns and using appropriate techniques to reinforce acceptable student behavior. - Perform clerical activities, such as word processing, typing, filing, duplicating materials, and maintaining records. - Maintain an inventory of materials, supplies and equipment, including necessary records. - Maintain student recoreds, attendance and files. - Operate a variety of instructional media, office machines and equipment. - Participate in District inservice programs. QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE Knowledge of: - Effective instructional strategies and curricular content appropriate to the job assignment. - General concepts of child growth and development. - Techniques used in classroom management and to support and motivate students. - Correct English usage, punctuation, spelling, grammar and mathematics. - Routine record keeping techniques. - Word processing and operation of office equipment. - General purposes and goals of public education. - Specific subject area content as required in job assignment. Ability to: - Assume responsibility assisting in the supervision and instruction of students. - Learn and utilize basic methods and procedures to be followed in instructional settings. - Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. - Communicate effectively in English. - Perform basic clerical work and basic arithmetical calculations. - Demonstrate an understanding, patient, warm and receptive attitude toward children. - Maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, parents and the general public. - Maintain strict confidentiality of student information and school business. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE - High School diploma or equivalent. - Volunteer or paid clerical experience or work with children in an educational or child care setting is desirable; or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities. - Evidence of participating in courses, seminars and workshops in the area of instructional services, psychology or guidance. REQUIREMENTS - Pass the District’s adopted Proficiency Examination with a satisfactory score. - Proficient in reading, writing, mathematics and oral language skills in English up to or exceeding that required for high school graduation. PERSONAL QUALITIES Mature emotional stability, interest in and understanding of students, good health; flexibility and patience. PHYSICAL ABILITIES - Vision to monitor students during classroom activities. - Hearing and speaking to exchange information and provide assistance to students in English. - Speaking so that others may understand at normal levels and on the telephone. - Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate specialized equipment or office equipment. - Sitting, standing, walking, twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, bending over at the waist grasping reaching overhead, pushing, pulling and moving, lifting and/or carrying 0-50 pounds to waist height.
