- Under the direction of professional medical staff, in the Emergency Room of Valley Medical Center hospital performs basic emergency and trauma care; and routine, daily care of Emergency Room equipment and supplies.
Positions located at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, St. Louise Regional Hospital, O'Connor Hospital, and Regional Medical Center for various shifts. However, the eligible list will be used for future vacancies, as they occur, as well as for Extra-Help (Temporary) assignments.

- Assists professional medical staff with patients requiring emergency and trauma techniques;
- May obtain patient history from patient or witnesses;
- Takes patient vital signs and reports any abnormalities;
- Transports patients into emergency and trauma treatment areas;
- Restrains patients as needed as directed by an M.D. or R.N.;
- Assists patients in dressing and undressing;
- Provides rapid measures to control patient bleeding;
- Assists with orientation of new staff;
- Cleanses wounds and performs topical wound preparations;
- Sets up procedure area for suturing and other procedures, and assists as required;
- Provides supportive duties in varying assignments including triage and trauma;
- Applies splints and elastic bandages; fits crutches and instructs patients in crutch walking;
- Performs visual acuity tests;
- Performs eye and ear irrigations under supervision;
- Assists with CPR and other emergency techniques;
- Operates electrocardiographic and other cardiac monitoring devices;
- Maintains emergency and trauma room supplies and equipment;
- Cleans instruments and trays;
- Assists Medical Staff with minor surgical procedures as required;
- Assists in all traumas by organizing specialized trays and assists physician in specialized procedures (i.e., chest insertions, thoractomy);
- Sets up and assists with specialized GYN procedures (i.e., suction curettage culdocentesis, etc.);
- May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Employment Standards
- Sufficient education, training and experience to demonstrate possession of the knowledge and abilities listed below.Training and Experience Note: The knowledge and abilities are typically acquired through possession of a high school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of hospital acute care or pre-hospital experience such as Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic, Certified Medical Assistant or Nursing Assistant (certified by the Medical Board of California) experience comparable to a Hospital Services Assistant II at SCVMC.Possession of current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) issued by the American Red Cross is required upon appointment.
Knowledge of:- Principles and techniques of asepsis;
- Principles of first aid;
- Relevant medical terminology;
- Patient observation skills;
- Principles of C-spine precaution;
- The set-up and use of all instruments, trauma equipment and supplies used in the Emergency Department;
- Basic principles of patient care.
- Recognize potentially serious medical problems and emergency situations;
- Learn hospital departments and organization;
- Learn department policies and procedures;
- Communicate effectively and calm patients during highly stressful situations;
- Effectively and courteously work with patients who may be hostile and suicidal;
- Perform a full range of emergency procedures;
- Work closely and effectively with all members of the health care team;
- Observe and report abnormal or emergency conditions (i.e., changes in loss in consciousness [LOC] and vital signs);
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with patients, visitors, and colleagues.
