Essential Job Functions

Veterans’ Internship Program
The Veterans’ Internship Program provides paid, on-the-job training opportunities for qualified veterans of the United States Armed Forces. This program is designed to help veterans gain valuable work experience and develop the skills needed to successfully compete for permanent County positions.

Depending on the assignment, interns may participate in a structured 12- to 24-month training program in one of the specialty areas listed below. Each pathway offers hands-on experience and career development to support your transition into County service.

Who We Are Looking For
We are seeking motivated, career-focused veterans who are ready to build a long-term career in public service. The program offers six distinct career pathways, each providing practical training, mentorship, and professional growth opportunities.


AVAILABLE CAREER PATHWAYS AND TYPICAL DUTIES:

1. Administrative Support
Monthly Salary: $4,229.36

  • Assist with research, analysis, and interpretation of administrative, budgetary, programmatic, and personnel matters.
  • Compile and analyze data to support administrative operations.
  • Assist in preparing written reports, correspondence, and presentations.

2. Crafts Support
Monthly Salary: $4,229.36
  • Assist skilled craft workers in installing, maintaining, repairing, and modifying equipment and facilities.
  • Assist with overhaul and repair of gasoline and diesel engines and related mechanical systems.

Special License Requirement:
A valid California Class A, B, or C driver's license may be required depending on assignment.

Physical Requirement:
Some assignments require moderate to arduous physical activity (Physical Class 3 – Moderate or Physical Class 4 – Arduous) and would require a corresponding physical examination.


3. Heavy Maintenance and Operational Support
Monthly Salary: $4,229.36
  • Assist in the repair and maintenance of roads, flood control channels, sewers, easements, sidewalks, and other publicly maintained properties.
  • Transport equipment and materials to work sites.
  • Assist with the operation of maintenance and power equipment.

Special License Requirement:
A valid California Class A, B, or C driver's license may be required, depending on assignment.

Physical Requirement:
Some assignments require moderate to arduous physical activity (Physical Class 3 – Moderate or Physical Class 4 – Arduous) and would require a corresponding physical examination.


4. Information Technology Support
Monthly Salary: $4,345.45
  • Assist with system analysis, application support, and technical troubleshooting.
  • Install, configure, and maintain computer hardware, software, and network systems.
  • Assist with coding, testing, and debugging applications.
  • Support system users and assist with technical documentation.

Physical Requirement:
Some assignments require moderate physical activity (Physical Class 3 – Moderate) and would require a corresponding physical examination.


5. Office and Clerical Support
Monthly Salary: $4,229.36
  • Provide receptionist and customer service support.
  • File, organize, and maintain records and documents.
  • Respond to routine public inquiries in person and by telephone.
  • Perform general clerical support duties.

Physical Requirement:
Some assignments require moderate physical activity (Physical Class 3 – Moderate) and would require a corresponding physical examination.


6. Outreach and Advocacy
Monthly Salary: $4,345.45
  • Conduct outreach and connect veterans and their families with County and community services by providing information, referrals, and linkage to appropriate programs and resources.
  • Assist veterans in accessing and navigating supportive services, including healthcare, housing, employment, legal assistance, and other programs that promote stability and well-being.

Requirements

No experience required; however, the veteran must have been discharged or released from active duty - in the United States Armed Forces under honorable conditions.

- Released from active duty refers to full-time military service, excluding active duty for training.

License:
A valid California Class C Driver's License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

Some assignments may require a valid California Class A, B, or C Driver's License at the time of appointment.

Successful applicants for positions that require driving must provide verification of their driver's license and a copy of their driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment.

A valid DD214, Certificate of Discharge or Separation after Service in the United States Armed Forces, is required.

Physical Class:
2 - Light. This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

Some assignments are rated Class (3 - Moderate) or Class (4 - Arduous) and require passing a physical exam.

3 - Moderate. Stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

4 -Arduous. Frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity, such as those in Safety positions.

Our Assessment Process:
Once we have identified that you meet the requirements, we will invite you to participate in an online, multiple-choice and/or simulation assessment, weighted 100%, measuring:

Applicants must meet the requirements and receive a passing score of 70% or higher on the multiple-choice and/or simulation assessment in order to be placed on the eligible register.

Eligibility and Vacancy Information:
Applicants who passed the assessment(s) are placed on an eligible register for a period of twelve (12) months. We will use this register to fill vacancies throughout the County of Los Angeles, as they occur. Applications will be processed on an as-received basis, and those earning a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

In lieu of traditional banding, an alternative banding procedure may be employed consistent with Civil Service Rule 11.01(D).
