Job Objective:

Under the immediate direction of the Laboratory Phlebotomy/Processing Supervisor and the Laboratory Assistant Director, the Certified Phlebotomist II performs various duties associated with specimen collection and processing for laboratory testing. Duties include venipuncture and capillary draws, specimen handling, maintaining supplies, equipment operation, answering questions related to specimens and testing, and assisting with the training new phlebotomists.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Certified Phlebotomist II

  1. Collects laboratory specimens and performs venipuncture and capillary sticks on patients
  2. Assists with the processing of laboratory specimens
  3. Organizes laboratory orders by priority and specimen type for proper collection and handling of specimens
  4. Operates the LIS and HIS as required for the position
  5. Follows proper isolation techniques
  6. Safely and effectively uses all necessary equipment
  7. Cleans laboratory equipment, work surfaces and glassware
  8. Receives and stocks supplies
  9. Records temperatures and notifies appropriate Clinical Laboratory Scientist of out-of-range values
  10. Answers questions regarding test orders, specimen requirements and specimen availability
  11. Demonstrates proper use of scripting techniques
  12. Participates in Continuing Education for personal growth and maintenance of certificates and licenses
  13. Assures completion of all yearly competency testing
  14. Assists in training new phlebotomists
  15. Demonstrates competence with computer downtime procedures
  16. Ability to perform at least 10 draws per hour of average complexity

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Helps distribute supplies to other departments as needed
  • Transports specimens and supplies between the main hospital lab and satellite locations
  • Adds support to other laboratory staff as necessary

  • Knowledge of basic computer operations
  • Knowledge of specimen requirements
  • Knowledge of safe handling of biological samples
  • Knowledge of basic isolation techniques
  • Demonstrates knowledge regarding special needs and behaviors of age specific groups and proficiency in required area

  • Skill in performing venipuncture and capillary draws
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication
  • Skill to accurately record values

Abilities

  • Ability to follow directions accurately
  • Ability to exhibit courteous, helpful and professional behavior in dealing with patients, public and peers

Experience

  • Certified PhlebotomistII six months of related phlebotomy experience required
  • Experience with infants and pediatrics is recommended
  • Some experience at an acute care hospital is desirable

Education and Experience:

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • Possession of a current Certified Phlebotomy Technician I orIIlicense issued by the State of California Department of Public Health

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform duties in a normal hospital clinical laboratory environment
