The Kings County Public Works Department is seeking a current civil engineering student who is interested in a paid internship position. This position does not provide any benefits or other compensation.

Depending on the number of units obtained, this position will receive the following compensation for hours worked. Unless below minimum wage, the salary for positions in this classification shall not exceed a rate higher than:

30-59 units: $26.79 per hour

60-89 units: $29.60 per hour

90 units to graduation: $32.69 per hour

DUTY SAMPLE

Some duties, knowledge, skills, and abilities may be performed in a learning capacity for entry-level (I Level) positions.

• Plans, designs, and inspects all phases of public works projects such as roadway, bridges and buildings, including defining the scope of the project; prepares funding requests to appropriate funding agencies; prepares plans, specifications, and cost estimates; performs research, map, and field studies and surveys; drafts site plans; coordinates construction schedules with other projects and agencies; inspects construction of projects to ensure compliance with construction documents.
• Provides construction administration, management, and inspection of engineering projects; administers and processes contract documents for design, construction, and maintenance of engineering projects; coordinates work with other contractors, consultants, and County departments; reviews and inspects work to ensure conformance with plans and specifications; tracks and maintains project accounting including authorization of construction payments; coordinates schedules; provides public notices of projects.
• Prepares consultant requests for proposal for professional and/or construction services and the advertising and bid processes, including responding to questions; evaluates proposals and recommends project award; prepares submittal packages for legal review; negotiates contract cost with the selected consultant.
• Prepares preliminary and final designs for a variety of Public Works engineering projects including roads, bridges, building and related structures; checks and processes tentative and final subdivision and parcel maps and records of surveys for accuracy, design, completeness and conformance to applicable ordinances and regulations.
• Provides technical assistance to other County departments; provides information on technical questions related to departmental activities to the general public.
• Reviews code requirements and standards for construction procedures; reviews project administration procedures and records documentation of federally and state funded projects.
• Reviews, analyzes, inputs and updates the County’s traffic collision database and pavement management system; performs traffic volume and traffic safety studies related to intersection/roadway design and provide recommendations on findings within relevant studies.
• Assists in budget preparation for the assigned projects or programs; monitors annual expenditures; assists in bid procedures.
• Drafts a variety of written communications, including analytical reports, correspondence, and revisions to plans, policies, and procedures.
• Drafts memos, resolutions, and project information for the Board of Supervisors.
• Performs related duties as assigned.
